It is porous allowing air circulation between the bottom of a mattress and the surface platform bed. the mat is strongly recommended for air flow for use as a breathable base for a traditional Shikibuton or futon mattress. Inadequate air circulation under a mattress can cause moisture buildup and eventually mildew growth. A Coconut Coir Mattress Bed Rug is an ideal solution for this problem, as it provides air circulation allowing for a cooler sleep surface addition to prohibiting the growth of mildew.
